Detection of selected words of sign language

The aim of the bachelor’s thesis is to find ways of detection the signs of sign language by processing the data from sensors. Part of this work is creation of a sufficiently large set of data by scanning the same sign signaled by different people. Then the data of this set is processed in Matlab.
Creating a 3D human model for teaching sign language

This thesis deals with developing of a mobile application for learning czech sign language. Individual signs will be shown by 3D model of human. Its movement will be based on videos where lector is demonstrating signs. By analyzing these videos, it will be achieved that the model will perform the same movement as the lector. Final mobile application will be compatible with mobile phones using Android operating system.
Cochlear implantation in prelingually deaf children from the perspective of people with hearing loss

This diploma thesis takes a look at cochlear implantation in prelingually deaf children from the view of adults with hearing loss. Although most hearing parents would most likely make use of the option to at least partially restore the hearing of their non-hearing child, that may not be the only possible solution for people with hearing loss. The aim of this thesis is to map and to clarify the views and opinions of people with hearing loss on cochlear implantation in prelingually non-hearing children. This thesis highlights the link between cochlear implants and the Deaf culture and community, where the topic of cochlear implantation is often controversial. The theoretical section introduces key topics regarding the aim of this thesis, especially the association between hearing loss and the Deaf community, communication of people with hearing loss, while also introducing basic information about cochlear implantation. In the practical section of the thesis, as part of the qualitative research, the statements of eleven respondents are quoted, which were obtained in the form of semi- structured interviews in Czech Sign Language. Comparison of opportunities of university studies of sign language in the Czech Republic, Australia and New Zealand

The bachelor thesis deals with the comparison of the opportunities of university studies of sign language in the Czech Republic, Australia and New Zealand. The initial information is compared at the theoretical level. The empirical part is not included. The thesis compares studies at all universities that provide study fields focused on Czech, Australian and New Zealand sign language. These are pedagogical, linguistic, interpreting and translation fields. The aim is to provide information on the content, distribution and process of education at individual universities, based on the description of fields of study and courses that schools publish on their websites and in study information systems. The described fields are selected according to predetermined criteria. The comparison also includes support services for students and their availability at the described universities. In the introductory chapters, the thesis deals with the history and specifics of sign languages and the development of the education of the deaf. Furthermore, the work focuses on the legislative anchoring of sign languages. Image schema for PATH in the Czech Sign Language

Summary: This thesis builds on current research about image schema PATH in Czech language. After a theoretical introduction of the cognitive-linguistic theory of conceptual, or image schemas and about iconic and iconic-metaphorical (double) mapping of sign language existing theoretical and methodological knowledge is compared with language material that captures expressions schema PATH in the Czech sign language. For these purposes a corpus of signs of Czech sign language that make use of the schema of PATH was acquired. Analyzed signs are categorized by target areas (semantic circuits) and also according to the criteria of phonological structure. Role of a Deaf Assistant and a Deaf Teacher in Primary Schools for Pupils with Hearing Impairment in Czech Language Lessons

The thesis deals with the roles of the deaf assistant and deaf teacher in a primary school for pupils with hearing impairment in the Czech language lessons. It can be notionally divided into two parts. The first part is dedicated to the theoretical education of the deaf, mainly to presentation of bilingual education and its application in contemporary education in our country and abroad. Thesis discusses the Czech sign language and the differences between it and the Czech language in the context of teaching Czech as a second language for the deaf. Adequate space is devoted to deaf assistant and deaf teacher and their work in the classroom in cooperation with hearing teacher. The second notional part contains analyzed data and results interpretation of the research, which was carried out through questionnaires and participant observation in classrooms. The outputs of the research showed that from view of respondents is presence of deaf teaching staff important for many different reasons. Involvement of deaf teacher in the learning process emerged almost equal as the participation of a hearing teacher. Participation of deaf assistant depends more on the individual agreement with the hearing teacher. The pairs had divided competencies in different ways.
Deixis and space in Czech sign language

This work presents fundamental extra-and intra- language features of deixis (referring to an entity out of the language and to an entity forward or backward in the text) in Czech sign language as well as in Czech language. The work also includes examples from other signed and spoken languages that are taken from relevant bibliography. In particular, more space is devoted to categories of contextual information referred to by deixis such as person, place, and time. Possible ways of how to distinguish deictic expressions from ostensive expressions in signed languages are introduced. In connection with different types of grammatical space in sign languages, route and survey perspectives are mentioned. In the practical part of the work there are described methods and results of the research on the choice of perspective by Czech sign language and Czech language users with regard to a different type of the described enviroment. The findings were, consequently, compared with the results from American sign language and English language. The second research focuses on strategies used by Czech sign language and Czech language users when describing the objects placed in shared space. Minimal pairs in Czech sign language

This thesis research focuses on the minimal pairs in the Czech sign language, in which segment a distinctive position may be filled by any parameter character (hand shape, place of articulation, movement, palm orientation, the orientation of the fingers, hands arrangement, and contact). The main part of this work is a one-handed and two-hand analysis of characters in which the hand / hands in the shape of the hand and closed, respectively in the shape of A, A0, A roof, sA and tA. The analyzed material was obtained from the Czech elicitation deaf native Czech sign language, and several excerption Czech sign language dictionaries. The main attention is concentrated on a detailed description of the manual components of signs and indication of possible semantic relationships between the characters figures in minimal pairs. In conclusion, the analytical part is an overview of phonemes found, possible variants of phonemes and frequency representation of character types and shapes of the hand / hands, places of articulation and places of contacts. Changes in height of articulation in Czech Sign Language affected by coarticulation

This thesis focuses on changes in the height of articulation in Czech Sign Language affected by coarticulation. The theoretical base of the thesis originates from both Czech and foreign linguistic literature devoted to phonological processes in speech. One part of the thesis is basic insight into the issues of phonological processes in sign languages. The research of the height of articulation in Czech Sign Language affected by coarticulation follows the recent studies dedicated on changes in height of articulation of speakers of Dutch, American, Australian and New Zealand Sign Languages (Ormel, Crasborn, Kooij 2013; Tyrone, Mauk 2010; Grosvald, Corina 2012a; Russell, Wilkinson, Janzen 2011; Lucas et al. 2002; Schembri et al. 2009). The goal of the research is to describe the changes in height of articulation by the one-handed lexical signs with the place of articulation in the head area (the target signs KNOW and REMEMBER) affected by their phonetic context. The data were collected during the recordings of sign langugae production of 15 participants, all speakers of Czech Sign Language. 1400 tokens of target signs were excerpted and analysed in total.
